Short and Scenic Runs

These are a few of our favourite places to run and explore buried in the heart of Oxford. The routes are perfect for city joggers looking for some short mid-week runs. Try combining the routes for a longer run.

Port Meadow

A few steps away from the bustling city centre is one of Oxford’s most idyllic meadows. The beautiful Port Meadow is a haven of nature housing flocks of birds, horses and cows. Runners can enjoy a short run around the meadow perfect for a mid week run.

Oxford University Parks

The University Parks consist of 70 acres of beautiful parklands based on the west bank of the River Cherwell. The parks hold rare and exotic plants including a genetic garden used to demonstrate the process of evolution. One lap of the parks is a short 2.3km which is great for beginners, double it up for a 5K.

South Park

Just a stone’s throw away from Oxford City Centre is this glorious park which occupies 50 acres of parkland offering magnificent views overlooking Oxford. The park has a fitness trail so why not turn your run into a full workout.

Christ Church Meadow

The journey through the grounds of Christ Church College keeps local joggers going back for more. The stunning college building is surrounded by magnificent greenery and wildlife, perfect for a stress relieving run along the banks of the Cherwell.

Here are a few of our top picks for trail running around Oxfordshire. The below locations have everything that an explorer would look for, rolling hills, ancient woods, secret forests and quaint villages.

Iffley Village

The beautiful village of Iffley located just three miles from Oxford City Centre offers a fantastic running experience. It’s just a short distance from Cowley Road and takes you through a maze of cobbled pathways, old buildings and eventually down to a lock.

Shotover Country Park

Located on the edge of Oxford, this country park is nestled in the middle of three woodlands. Get lost in nature with over 289 acres of scenic valleys and landscapes perfect for trail runs. The size and nature of the country park allows for varied run distances and difficulties perfect for runners of all abilities.

Bagley Wood

Undulating, muddy and ever so slightly hilly, Bagley wood is eight miles of trail fun. There are lots of routes to choose from making it great for runners of all abilities. For a more challenging endurance session try the Bagley Wood and Boars Hill run.

Charlbury and the Secret Forest

This trail takes explorers on a tour of the ancient Wychwood Forest incorporating the quaint surrounding villages and the small town of Charlbury. There are a couple of routes that runners can do of up to nine miles but be sure to take your time taking in everything that this beautiful trail has to offer.

Chilswell Valley

Located in the south-west of Oxford, runners can explore four to five miles of rolling hills and woodlands that overlook Oxford’s spires and university landscape. The route can also take you through the beautiful village of South Hinskey full of traditional stone cottages and farmlands.

Kidlington Village

Encompassing historic ruins, floodplains and the Oxford Canal this four mile route is fantastic for any Oxford Explorer. The trail takes runners past the grand St Mary’s Church and past the ruins of the Hampton Gay manor house. Any runner who loves to explore and get lost in history will enjoy this run.

Grandpont Nature Park is best accessed by foot or cycle along the Thames Path from Whitehouse Road or from Oxpens Meadow.

The open meadow areas provide a place to sit and relax, enjoy the river views and wildlife.

The woodland areas provide shade and homes for many mammals and birds.

Extend your walk into the city centre via Oxpens Meadow, continue along the Thames Path to Port Meadow or towards Donnington, or go ice skating at Oxford Ice Rink.

Backing onto Grandpont Nature Reserve, Grandpont Park also offers sports pitches, a pavilion and play area.

Christchurch Meadow Walk

Christchurch meadow is a rare open space at the heart of Oxford, open to the public all year round. Though seemingly tranquil, the meadow is highly variable, with seasonal flooding and a variety of wildlife that comes and goes. During the Civil War it proved invaluable as a defence against the Parliamentarian forces, but visitors are nowadays more likely to encounter a rare English Longhorn cow than a soldier besieging the city.

The meadow has long been used as a site for sport, entertainment and recreation. It was the location for some of the earliest balloon flights in England: in 1784 James Sadler, ‘the first English aeronaut’ rose from Christ Church meadow, landing six miles away after a half-hour flight. In May 1785 Sadler again ascended from the meadow, this time with the statesman William Windham as a passenger.

The meadow is enclosed by the rivers Cherwell and Thames – the Thames is known as the Isis whilst flowing through the city. The Isis is home to the college boathouses where rowing teams gather to train and compete. Every summer the major intercollegiate regatta takes place (better known as Summer VIIIs) as it has done since the competition’s inauguration in 1815. Crews from across the university descend annually on the Cherwell to compete in a four-day competition. Fittingly, Christ Church has been the most successful men’s crew, with 32 victories. Sommerville (the former college of Margaret Thatcher) is the most successful women’s crew, with 8 victories since the women’s competition began in 1976.

Thames Path

Check out this 7.4-mile loop trail near Oxford, Oxfordshire. Generally considered an easy route, it takes an average of 3 h 9 min to complete.

This trail is great for hiking and walking, taking in a variety of green spaces and parks in Oxford passing through University Parks, New Marston Meadows, the farmlands beside the River Cherwell, and around Christ Church Meadow.

The trail also passes a number of historic sites and places for refreshments. There are some rougher sections along this trail where care is needed especially in wetter conditions when the paths become muddy. Appropriate footwear is advised.

South Oxford Adventure Playground

The South Oxford Adventure Playground is a charity run by volunteers and play workers. It is free and open to everyone.

SOAP is a place where children can play freely, meet new friends and have fun in a natural and physically challenging environment. It offers an indoor and outdoor space where children can express themselves creatively and test themselves physically. There isn’t a screen in sight!

The outside space has a wooden fort, tower to climb,  zip wire, football pitch, wobbly bridge, tyre and rope swings, slides, den making area, fire pit, and trees to climb. Come along and discover the fun of SOAP!

SOAP aims to provide inclusive, exciting and adventurous play for children aged 7 and over, within a supervised playground. All children are welcome. Those under 7 must be accompanied by an adult. Playworkers are onsite after school and through the holidays to support and encourage children in their play.

Oxpens Meadow

One of the parks and green spaces protected by Fields in Trust in perpetuity. Because once they are gone, they are gone forever.

The site lies south of the central area of Oxford, and is directly accessed from Oxpens Road.  The meadow is adjacent to Castle Mill Stream and the River Thames to its eastern and southern boundaries respectively.

Access onto the site is via an unmade footpath leading from the Oxpens Road entrance across the meadow towards the river, whilst the site can be accessed from two points to the south of the site via a made up footpath which runs parallel to the river.

There are no specific disabled accessways to the site, however its flat low lying topography provides little impediment for access from a wide range of users.

The meadow comprises of publicly accessible green open space which is primarily used for sports, pastimes, or informal recreational or reflective space.  It is popular with local residents and tourists given the extensive river views, and has in the past been used as a area for organised public events such as fun fairs or the circus etc.

Operated by Fusion Lifestyle, the excellent Hinksey Heated Lido/Outdoor Pool is open May to September for swimming and group exercise activities & cafe on site.  Children must be accompanied by guardian. No glass on premises. Swim at your own risk.  Call front desk for pool hours.

Ethos Hotel has a sweet history as its 59 Western Road location was once the site of the Grandpont Bakery, owned by Charlie Crapper. Charlie also owned a grocer’s shop and coal merchant’s yard, located just north of St. Matthew’s Church, originally built in 1890 and still very much in service today, just around the corner from Ethos Hotel.

The bakery specialized in providing dough for local residents to take home and knead into a loaf. Some would add fruit, turning the dough into a “lardy cake.” The residents would then return to the bakery with their creation packed in a tin so that Charlie could bake it in his ovens.

Charlie Crapper passed away in 1937, but the bakery continued to thrive under the supervision of one of his employees, Mr. Backs. Then, in 1948, part of the bakery premises was leased to Arthur Carter, who established the Grandpont Creamery. His fine, homemade ice creams were sold in villages throughout Oxfordshire and at St. Giles’ Fair.

Directly across from 59 Western Road is the site of Ethos Hotel’s fully licensed bar and restaurant, Caffè Ethos. Originally known as Marlborough House, built in 1888, it stands at the corner of Marlborough Road and Western Road and carries on the sweet tradition of baking and ice creams.

Our delectable dessert menu has such offerings as Tiramisu, Molten Chocolate Pudding, Bread and Butter Pudding, Key Lime Italian Meringue Pie, and Crespelle Dolci, which are light and luscious Italian style crepes. Our gelato, sorbet, and frozen yoghurts come in a variety of flavours and would make the Grandpont Creamery proud.

To submit a claim you must contact us up to 24 hours after your reservation is made via our website using the online claim form also at the footer of the Home page.

If your room was booked as part of a group booking, the person who made the booking on behalf of the group must make the claim.

If your room was booked through a tour operator, you must make your claim to the tour operator.

The name on the claim must match the name on the reservation for each room.

Only one claim may be submitted for each reservation.

Golfers can enjoy 18 or 9 holes of golf on our Championship Course. Tee times can be booked online or by calling reception on 01865 327775.

There are concessionary green fees for Under-18s but these are not accessible through the online booking system.  If an adult is also playing, please book just the adult online and pay the Junior fee when checking in.

We offer member guest rates to County Card holders.  Please call to make a reservation as online booking is priced only at visitor rates.

We are busier at weekends, especially in the mornings when competitions are normally played, therefore we encourage new or less confident golfers to book at quieter times and in smaller groups to maintain the pace for all. Buggies are also available to book through reception.

Balls, tees, hats, gloves, shirts and similar items can be purchased at reception, along with range ball hire.

The practice putting and chipping greens are available for members, green fee ticket holders and driving range users.

Nature Trail

The Hinksey Heights Nature Trail is accessed near “The 19th Hole” and is situated in a beautiful wooded valley between the golf course and Harcourt Hill, joining up with a number of excellent walking routes.

Refreshments

Hot and cold drinks, meals, snacks and ice creams are served in “The 19th Hole” and most items are available to take out should you wish.

We welcome golfers, footgolfers, and anyone passing through on their journey whether on foot, bicycle or in a motorised vehicle.

Well-behaved dogs on leads are also welcome in “The 19th Hole”, but no dogs are allowed on the golf or footgolf courses.

Ethos Hotel is a no smoking premises in order to comply with the law and to comply with Health & Safety Regulations for Staff. Therefore, smoking in bedrooms and within the internal hotel boundaries is against the law (a criminal offence) and strictly prohibited. A £100 charge will be added to your bill for cleaning if you smoke in the room.

Safes are in each room. If you need help operating it, please do not hesitate to ask.

There is a spare pillow in the wardrobe. If you require more pillows, blankets or towels, or require an anti-allergenic pillow, please contact Reception.

Please contact Reception to enquire about church service times at St Matthew’s Church, adjacent to the hotel, or at any other places of worship within the city.

All bedrooms have an on-suite shower, the shower has two rotary controls for adjusting the temperature and water. Only our Deluxe and Suite room types have baths.

The tap for the bath is operated by pulling the lever towards you for water, the heat is controlled by rotating the lever (clockwise for heat).

Please ask if you have difficulty understanding how to operate the bath or shower.

Both the towel rail and bathroom floor are heated and can be switched on and off from a switch located just outside the bathroom.

Complimentary toiletries are provided and replenished daily. Please ask if you require additional supplies.

We also ask that you dispose of any sanitary waste in the bins provided.

Integrated or portable hair-dryers are available in each room, either in the bathroom or in the drawer in the bedroom.

Should you lose your key card please notify the front desk immediately so that your lock may be recoded. Please return your key card to the front desk upon check-out.

Operating Instructions

1. Tap the card on the black response zone at the top of the lock
2. Wait for the green light to come on followed by a beep
3. Turn the handle to open the door
4. The light will turn red if the key is expired or if it is used on the incorrect door. See staff for assistance.

The DirectKey app lets you use your phone as a hotel room key. You’ll have the freedom to access your guest room, side doors, and anywhere else you would normally use a hotel key card.

1. Don’t answer the door in a hotel room without verifying who is there. If a person claims to be an employee, call the front desk and ask if someone from their staff is supposed to have access to your room and for what purpose.
2. When returning to your hotel late in the evening, use the main entrance of the hotel. Be observant and look around before entering car parks, and before leaving your vehicle.
3. Close the door securely whenever you are in your room and use all of the locking devices provided.

Your Best Defence Against a Fire is to Plan Ahead.

• Please note the escape route on the back of your bedroom door. Then count the doors between your room and exits so you’ll have a reference point if it is smoky or dark.
• When you hear an alarm, ACT, don’t simply investigate. The muster point is outside Caffè Ethos for rooms 101-115, and outside the Lobby for rooms 216-225.
• If the fire is in your room, get out and close the door. Alert your neighbours. Once out, report the fire.
• In the event of an emergency please call 999. From the hotel room phone you will need to call 9+999 (for Police, Ambulance or the Fire service).
• If the fire is not in your room, leave if you can. First, feel the door. If it is cool, open it slowly and go to the nearest exit. Crawl if there is smoke. Fresher air will be at the floor. Take your key card so you can go back to your room if you can’t use the exits.
• If your door is hot, don’t open it. Your room may be the safest place to be. Seal all cracks with wet towels. Shut off fans and air conditioners. Signal from your window. Call the fire department and wait to be rescued.

We’re right in the heart of everything.  Beaches, restaurants, bars & attractions, we have it all!  Our top recommendations can be found on the Maps tab of this guide.  Here is some general information though to help you get your bearings:

Restaurants
Most of your top restaurants will be found in the downtown area which is about 1/2 mile north of the hotel.  It is normally easier to walk as finding parking can be difficult.  There are also Ubers that can do the short trip for you.

Bars
Bars can be found both in the downtown area as well as the beach.  Downtown bars will be more formal, while the beach is where you’ll find the ‘beach bars’ and a more casual atmosphere.

Beaches
The most popular beach access point is about two miles up the road.  There is public parking on a first come first server basis although it does tend to get crowded by late morning.  We recommend going in the morning and staying until lunch time as after lunch can get hot on the beach.

Pool
A salt water in-ground swimming pool is located on the first floor adjacent to the lobby.

Please observe the following pool rules:

Fitness Center
While there is not a fitness center onsite, we offer complimentary passes to the nearby fitness club about 1/2 mile up the road.  If you expect to use the fitness club, please come get a pass during lobby hours.

Fire Pit
A fire pit is located on the north side of the lobby.  We provide firewood stacked next to the fire pit & also keep a lighter in the hotel lobby.  In the cooler months, our B&B manager will light a fire every evening around 6PM.

Each of our rooms features a kitchenette with the following appliances:

• Coffee Pot
• Mini-fridge & freezer

We also have plates, bowls and kitchen utensils available for eating.  It’s great to cook breakfast and other smaller meals.
